چکیده

When the toxin of the black snake {Walterirmesia aegyptea) was injected subcutaneously into albino rats, one of the common symptoms which appeared was the paralysis which takes place in the limb near the site of injection and extends to other limbs just before death. Such observations led us to examine the changes produced in a stimulated gastrocnemius-sciatic preparation of Bufo to show the effect of the toxin and the site of its action. No work had been done on the action of the black snake toxin on the nervemuscle preparation. Yet much work has been published about such data for other poisonous snakes. Lauder, Brunton & Fayrer (1874) were the first to demonstrate a curare-like action of cobra venom in dogs. Epstein (1930) observed complete loss of excitability of voluntary muscles brought about by cape cobra venom and Kellaway & Holden (1932) demonstrated the direct action of venom on muscles. Sarker (1951) has reported the action of Indian cobra venom both on the muscle and neuromuscular junction, the paralysis of the latter setting in much earlier and with smaller concentrations of the venom. The aim of this work was to study the following points: (1) The effect of the toxin of the black snake on the contraction height of gastrocnemius muscle when stimulated directly and/or indirectly. (2) The site of action of the toxin. (3) The mechanism of action of the toxin.

Effect of Local Administration of Laminin and Fibronectin with Chitosan Conduit on Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: A Rat Sciatic Nerve Transection Model

Objective-Effect of local administration of laminin and fibronectin on nerve regeneration was assessed. Design- Experimental study. Animal- Sixty male Wistar rats. Procedures- The animals were divided into four experimental groups (n=15), randomly: In transected group left sciatic nerve was transected and stumps were fixed in adjacent muscle. In treatment group (CHIT/LF) the defect was bridg...

Molecular Mechanisms of Treadmill Therapy on Neuromuscular Atrophy Induced via Botulinum Toxin A

Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) is a bacterial zinc-dependent endopeptidase that acts specifically on neuromuscular junctions. BoNT-A blocks the release of acetylcholine, thereby decreasing the ability of a spastic muscle to generate forceful contraction, which results in a temporal local weakness and the atrophy of targeted muscles. BoNT-A-induced temporal muscle weakness has been used to manage sk...

P55: The Effect of Dimethyl Sulphoxide on Sciatic Nerve Regeneration in Rats with Eggshell Membrane Guide Channel

Autograft is gold standard treatment for peripheral nerve repair up to now. Eggshell membrane (ESM) as nerve guide channel effectively enhances nerve regeneration. Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of DMSO+eggshell membrane guide channel on sciatic nerve regeneration in rats. Thirty two adult male rats ...

Objective- The objective was to assess local effect of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on functional recovery of peripheral nerve in rat sciatic nerve transection model. Design- Experimental study. Animals- Sixty male healthy white Wistar rats Procedures- The animalswere randomized into four experimental groups of 15 animals each: In sham-operated group (SHAM), sciatic nerve was exp...

Characteristics of nondepolarizing neuromuscular block: (I) post-junctional block by alpha-bungarotoxin.

The characteristics of neuromuscular block produced by alpha-bungarotoxin, a post-junctionally active polypeptide toxin purified from snake venoms, have been studied in vivo in 12 anaesthetized cats, using the sciatic nerve-tibialis anterior muscle preparation. The onset of the neuromuscular block was slow and without fasciculation. The block was persitently progressive. The time course of the ...
